ezSign Validator

The ezSign Validator checks electronically signed documents and tells you whether each signature is valid and how strong it is. It recognizes both the EU eIDAS framework and the Swiss ZertES framework, and figures out which one applies automatically.

You can use it two ways:

  • In the browser - upload a signed document and read the result.
  • From another application - send the document to the Validator's API and get the result back.

How to validate a document

  1. Open the Validator and sign in with your organization's single sign-on.
  2. Upload the signed document (for some signature types you also upload the original file).
  3. Read the result - each signature is shown as valid, invalid, or inconclusive, with details.
  4. If you need a record, download the full report.

Send the signed document to the Validator's API and it returns the result as data your application can read. Your {{ product_name }} contact provides the exact address and access details.

What the result tells you

For each signature in the document, the Validator reports:

  • Is it valid? - passed, failed, or inconclusive.
  • Which framework applies - EU eIDAS, Swiss ZertES, or unknown if the signature isn't from a recognized trust list. The Validator decides this automatically from the document itself.
  • How strong it is - for example a qualified signature (the highest level), or a lower level.
  • For Swiss signatures - whether it counts as equivalent to a handwritten signature under Swiss law.

The framework is detected for you

You never have to tell the Validator whether a document is EU or Swiss - it works that out from the signature itself. A signature from one country can be checked by an organization in another.

A failed signature is a normal result

If a signature doesn't check out, that is reported as a normal result (valid / invalid / inconclusive) - it isn't treated as an error. Errors are reserved for problems like not being signed in, or an unreadable upload.

  • It only reads the document to check the signatures - it doesn't change or store your file.

FAQ

How does the Validator know whether a document is EU or Swiss?

It works it out automatically from the signature in the document. You never pass that in. A document from one country can be checked by an organization in another.

What kinds of signed documents can it check?

Common electronically signed formats, including signed PDFs and signature containers, at all standard signature levels.

Does an invalid signature cause an error?

No. Whether a signature is valid, invalid, or inconclusive is reported as a normal result. Errors are reserved for problems like not being signed in or an unreadable upload.

What does "equivalent to a handwritten signature" mean?

Under Swiss law, a qualified electronic signature combined with a qualified timestamp is legally equivalent to a handwritten signature. When that is the case, the Validator says so.
